Charlie Hoober's Bio
operators to farm more ground. By the early seventies eastern farmers’ appetite for tractor power began to outgrow the current technology of two wheel drive row crop tractors.
Charlie Hoober saw the potential for more powerful, articulated 4 wheel drive tractors and heavy folding equipment and introduced Steiger tractors, Sunflower and Krause tillage to the east in 1976. Hoobers sold thirty five Steiger tractors in 1977 from their stores in Intercourse, Pennsylvania and Sudlersville, Maryland. The same year Charlie introduced the rotary combine concept to the harvesting side of production agriculture when International Harvester built their first Axial Flow combines.

Always seeking ways to improve crop production through technology, Charlie introduced Great Plains folding grain drills and D.M.I. deep tillage systems to Lancaster County farmers. Hoobers also embraced electronic systems as a method of improving production agriculture by having employees specialize in the service of monitoring equipment for planters, sprayers, combines and tractors. Hoober, Inc started working with precision farming in 1995.

Charlie Hoober built his farm machinery business by expanding to Middletown, Delaware in 1982 and to Seaford, Delaware in 2002; and to central Pennsylvania by opening a store in McAlisterville in 1996.

As Charlie grew his business into other areas, he maintained his commitment to Lancaster County agriculture by serving on the board of Lancaster Farmland Trust for several years. Since leaving the board he maintains his active involvement in farmland preservation by working to preserve the farms of his Amish neighbors in Eastern Lancaster County. Charlie also served as an agricultural representative on the Route 23 Task Force and as a long time member of First Union Bank’s Ag Advisory Board. He is also an active member of the Intercourse Lions Club and member of Messiah College’s Regional Board of Associates.

Charlie is well respected across North America as an innovative dealer in farm machinery. He served a six year term on the Board of Directors of the PA/NJ Equipment Dealers Association. Over the years he has served on numerous dealer advisory boards with IH and Case IH; his contacts with company personnel and other dealers of all brands enables Charlie to continue to seek and supply innovative technologies that still improve the productivity of farm operators in Lancaster County and the entire Eastern United States.

Charlie is an FFA graduate from Pequea Valley High School. He also has an Ag Mechanization Degree from Penn State University.

Charlie and his wife Sally have three children and nine grand children. Charlie’s two sons, Chuck and Scott, manage Hoober, Inc’s Middletown, Delaware Store.
